The current linear economy,<\/strong> based on extraction, consumption and disposal, causes high resource consumption<\/strong> and negative environmental impacts: climate change, loss of biodiversity, CO2 emissions. To ensure a better future, it is instead necessary to adopt a circular economy<\/strong>, which involves reducing waste and reintegrating it into the production cycle, promoting responsible resource consumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To guide this transition, since March 2022 the European Commission has been working on the ESPR \u2013 Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation<\/strong>, the regulation establishing the new \u00ab\u00a0Digital Product Passport<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb (DPP \u2013 Digital Product Passport<\/strong>). The Regulation (Reg. EU 2024\/1781) entered into force on 18 July 2024<\/strong> and will become fully applicable from July 2026<\/strong>, within the broader European Green Deal<\/strong>. The DPP is also one of the key initiatives aimed at making Europe the first zero-emissions continent by 2050.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What is the Digital Product Passport and what does it entail?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The new Digital Product Passport<\/strong> (DPP) is a set of data applied to the finished product that provides access to information on sustainability across the entire value chain<\/strong>: raw materials, production, recycling and end of life. This is made possible through so-called \u00ab\u00a0data carriers<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb (i.e. QR codes, 1D barcodes, RFID, NFC and Bluetooth tags) which play a key role in creating transparency about products<\/strong> and promoting the transition towards a circular economy<\/strong>.

The DPP will need to contain information on the composition and origin of materials, carbon footprint, durability, repairability and recycled content. This is not merely a regulatory requirement: without the Digital Passport, the product cannot be placed on the EU market<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The ESPR Work Plan 2025\u20132030, adopted by the European Commission on 16 April 2025, defines categories and timelines. Among the sectors already governed by vertical regulations with an explicit DPP obligation are batteries<\/strong> (Reg. EU 2023\/1542, mandatory from 18 February 2027) and construction products<\/strong> (Reg. EU 2024\/3110, pending delegated acts).
